The South Dakota Highway Patrol says an 82-year old man was hit by a car and killed Monday afternoon as he crossed Highway 18 between Hot Springs and Maverick Junction.
Release of names is pending notification of family.
The Highway Patrol says the 72-year old woman driving the car told troopers she was eastbound cresting a hill when she suddenly saw the man crossing the roadway in front of her.
She said she swerved to try to avoid hitting him but struck him with the front passenger side of the car. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured.
