Pennington County Jail Inmate Found Dead In Cell

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate died in his cell at the jail in Rapid City on Tuesday afternoon.

The inmate, whose name has not been released, is described as a 63-year old Rapid City man being held on state charges.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Helene Duhamel says the man was found unresponsive in his cell about 2:30 PM.

Medical personnel conducted to resuscitate him before he was taken by ambulance to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

Duhamel says the case is being handled by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation as routine procedure for deaths that occur in custody to get an “uninvolved third party to look at the facts.”
