Peru State College, Tecumseh Prison Working On Corrections Staff Program

LINCOLN, Neb (AP) – Peru State College and the state prison in Tecumseh are working on a program that state corrections director Scott Frakes says would be the first of its kind in the country.

Nebraska’s prisons have struggled for years with inmate unrest brought on by overcrowding and staffing issues. The proposed partnership between the college and the prison would create new opportunities for criminal justice students interested in becoming corrections officers.

The program would allow students to take internships at the Tecumseh prison while seeking their bachelor’s degrees, then upon graduation get jobs at the prison at higher than starting levels as sergeants or case managers.
