Pine Ridge Man Takes Plea Deal For Killing Brother

PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) – A Pine Ridge Reservation man has accepted a plea bargain in the January death of his brother.

52-year old Lawrence Pourier of Pine Ridge was originally charged with 2nd-degree murder in the death of Eric Pourier, but instead entered a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter.

Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 15 years, but the prosecution and defense are both recommending 10 years – although the judge is not required to follow the recommendation.

Pourier said in a factual basis statement that after he got into a fight with his brother at a home near Porcupine, he went to the garage, got a piece of pipe, and came back into the house.

Pourier said he then hit his brother, who was kneeling, on back and head at least 20 times. The autopsy of Eric Pourier listed the cause of death as acute blood loss due to blunt force trauma.
