A Pine Ridge Reservation man has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for killing another man on the reservation in July 2021.

37-year old Dirk Garnier of Oglala pleaded guilty in February to voluntary manslaughter and firearm charges in the death of Beau Blacksmith.  .

Garnier was originally charged originally with 2nd-degree murder, but a plea agreement saw prosecutors reduce the charges and agree to recommend a 20-year prison sentence instead of the maximum of life.

According to the factual basis statement he signed, Garnier said he and Blacksmith were drinking at Garnier’s home when they got into an argument.
