Prison Staffer Shanked In The Hand

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The Nebraska Dept of Correctional Services says a staffer at the Lincoln Correctional Center suffered serious injuries about 6:30 Thursday evening when she was assaulted by an inmate. Names have not been released.

Corrections Chief of Staff Laura Strimple says the inmate was in restraints after having been escorted from his cell so a maintenance issue could be inspected, but was still able to use a homemade weapon fashioned from a toothbrush to cause two puncture wounds to the back of the woman’s hand.

Additional prison staff responded immediately and controlled the inmate with the use of pepper spray. The wounded staffer was taken to a Lincoln hospital where a medical adhesive was utilized to close her puncture wounds.

Strimple says the incident will be investigated and the findings provided to the Lancaster county attorney’s office, which will decide if criminal charges are filed.

The inmate will also go through the corrections department disciplinary process for possible sanctions such as loss of good time.
