Proposed Chadron Deer Management Plan Unveiled

CHADRON – The Chadron City Council Monday night got its first look at a proposed management plan for deer inside the city limits.

Police Chief Tim Lordino said deer in town have always been a nuisance, but have become a growing problem with an estimated 225 in a 7-square mile area in 2016 and over 330 this year.

Lordino said there are many areas of town where a dozen or more deer may congregate at any given time, damaging young trees either by feeding on bark or just rubbing against them, ravaging gardens, and posing risks to vehicles

What finally led Lordino to seek expert advice was the number of deer he was seeing that appeared sick, possibly with chronic wasting disease.

Lordino says the talks grew into a full-fledged planning process that resulted in a plan based on police officers shooting deer when appropriate.

It also puts an emphasis on getting residents to stop either intentionally or unintentionally feeding deer.
