Rapid City Fire Chief Retires Ahead Of Major Budget Cuts

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – Rapid City has a new fire chief following the unexpected retirement over the weekend of Rod Seals.

Jason Culbertson, the department’s medical operations division chief, became interim fire chief on Monday and will hold the post until Mayor Steve Allender makes a permanent appointment.

Chief Seals was one of 4 firefighters to retire over the weekend after $282,000 was cut from the department budget to save money. The department was also told to reduce overtime.

Culberton says he had no idea he was being considered as interim chief, but likes the idea of having 60 days to see if he likes the new job and is able to convince the mayor he’s good enough to keep it.
