Funeral services for 54-year old Richard Steve “Rick” Tail will be Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 2:00 at the Medicine Wheel Sundance Grounds in Porcupine, SD, with the Rev Juan Mesteth of the Native American Church officiating and traditional Lakota services by Mr Mike Little Boy Sr

Burial services will be at the Swallow Family Cemetery in Porcupine

A one-night wake service starts Friday, August 21, 2020 at 5:00 PM, also at the Medicine Wheel Sundance Grounds in Porcupine

Richard Steven Tail “Isnala Wica” was born on September 1, 1965 in Pine Ridge, SD to Aloysius Tail and Bernice (Swallow) Tail. Richard made his journey to the Spirit World on August 14, 2020 in Aurora, CO.

Rick attended grade school in Porcupine, SD, Lincoln, NE and St. Francis, SD. He later attended high school at Red Cloud Indian School and graduated from Little Wound High School.

Rick played basketball and ran cross country throughout his high school years. He ran for the Red Cloud Crusaders and the Little Wound Mustangs, placing in the South Dakota Finals and setting records at State and local track meets.

Rick went on to receive two degrees from the Oglala Lakota College; one in carpentry and the other as an electrician.

Rick enlisted in the United States Army in 1984 and was stationed in Germany. When he returned home, he met and married Ardegene White Hawk of Manderson, SD. To this union, two beautiful girls were born, Stacie and RaeAnn.

Rick traveled as a “Roadman” around the United States representing the Native American Church. He was fluent in the Lakota language, a well-known singer, and was a great teacher. He will be sincerely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Stacie Tail of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, JaReem Tail and Kaleb Carter Tail, both of Rapid City, SD; siblings, Twyla (Marvin) Iron Boy, Diane Tail and Alicia (Les) Tail, all of Porcupine, SD and Lester (Sammi) Tail of California; uncle, David (Nyla) Swallow, Jr. of Porcupine, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Bernice Tail; daughter, RaeAnn Tail; stepdaughter, Lynette Goggles; uncles, Richard Swallow, Sr., Cleveland Tail, Don Tail, Frederick Tail and Ambrose Tail; grandfather, David Swallow, Sr.; and hunka brother, Lionel Hernandez.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Sierra, Rider Sierra, John Iron Boy, TJ Iron Cloud, Les Rowland, David Swallow III, Alfred Swallow, Tony Iron Cloud, Brian Swallow, Bo Richards, John Slaughter, Steve Tail and Bosco Byrd.
