Robert Lamont

Graveside services for 87-year old Robert Lamont are Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the Lakota Freedom Veterans Cemetery in Kyle, SD, with Cecelia Spotted Bear and Stanley Hollow Horn officiating.

Visitation will precede the service from 11-1:00 at the Church of God in Wounded Knee, SD.

Robert Pierre Lamont was born on May 17, 1933 in Fast Horse Creek, SD to Cecelia (Fast Horse) Lamont and John Lamont. Robert made his journey to the Spirit World on October 18, 2020 at the Sanford USD Medical Center & Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Robert (Sonny) was given the Native Lakota name “Thokahe Wanbli” (Leading Eagle) by Aunt Mary Fast Horse. At age 15, his mom and dad signed consent forms to enlist him into the Marines. Robert was in boot camp at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA.

After training, he was sent to Korea. While on the battlefield, Robert was wounded and rescued by a friend he had trained with. His friend was driving a battle tank, saw Robert, picked him up, put him in the tank, and drove him to safety.

Robert spent many months in Korea and in Japan recovering from his wounds. Upon returning to the US, President Eisenhower presented Robert with the Purple Heart and many other achievements. Many of his medals later burned up in a fire in his parents home.

Robert loved to hunt and enjoyed going to Rodeos, as well as watching Rodeos on T.V. Everyone that met Robert enjoyed his company. He loved to joke and tease. He had a good heart and was good to everybody. He was humble and he was kind to everyone. Robert was a good man. He loved going to church and was a devoted church member. He enjoyed the pot-luck meals and bingo at church and always donated to the bingo jackpot at the end.

Robert will be missed by his two sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and all his friends. We love him and there will be an emptiness in our hearts until we meet again. We love you Sonny. – Kay & Alice & Church Family
