RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City is furloughing over 40 employees as a result of the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Furloughs are expected to begin no later than June 1 and continue throughout the summer, with the option of calling employees back early if needed.
The Civic Center closed to the public March 23, but all employees with pay that includes benefits have remained on the job preparing for next year’s year’s event season.
Rushmore Plaza Executive Director Craig Baltzer says the extended closure and expected lost revenues from event cancellations and postponements led to the difficult decision for the layoffs.
Baltzer says every staff member will be affected by the furloughs, which will be managed by each department so that the Civic Center can be ready to roll for the events still on the calendar for the next few months.
