SD House Passes Sales Tax Reduction Despite Noem Opposition

A group of conservative Republican members of the South Dakota House successfully passed a half-cent cut in the state’s sales tax despite the opposition of Governor Kristi Noem. The 39-31 vote sends it on to the Senate.

Representative Chris Karr called it a way to make good on a 2016 law that promised to reduce the 4.5% sales tax if the state won the right to tax sales from online sellers, which it did under a U-S Supreme Court ruling.

Many backers of the tax cut have sparred with the governor over the state budget this year.
