Loading

A man from Scotts Bluff County serving a lengthy sentence in the South Dakota Penitentiary in Sioux Falls has been convicted in federal court of running a large drug ring out of the prison.

38-year-old Ray Camacho Sr is the last of 22 defendants indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the drug ring to be convicted.

Camacho faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years when he’s sentenced on charges of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering

Authorities say Camacho was serving a 31-to-64 year sentence for drug and weapons counts while leading a drug trafficking organization believed responsible for distributing at least 120 pounds of methamphetamine.

Prosecutors say he arranged and orchestrated multi-pound deliveries of meth from Mexico through 3-way phone calls made from the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
