Six Mustangs Battle Weather, Earn State Track Berths

The teams competing in the C-9 district track meet on Thursday had more than hurdles to jump over. The meet was twice delayed by weather in Grant and was then relocated to Ogallala to be completed. The final event of the night, the boys 4x400m relay, ended after 9:00 pm mountain time.

Gordon-Rushville’s McKinley Grover was the only double gold medal winner and will make a return trip to Omaha after winning both the shot put (38’ 9”) and discus (133’ 8”). Tyrah American Horse claimed a 1st place finish by claiming the mile in 5:35.37.

Franklin Johns grabbed the only gold for the Mustang boys in the 800m with a time of 2:00.05. Jace Freeseman and Greg Johns used runner-up finishes to qualify in two events each. Freeseman will go to Omaha in the 200m (23.08) and 400m (50.43) and Johns in the 1600m (4:44.30) and 3200m (10:43.72).

Aydon McDonald rounds out the state goers with his silver medal in the 300m hurdles (40.06).

The Class C state track meet begins next Friday in Omaha at Burke Stadium.
