Sobbing Defendant Says Screwdriver Stabbing Death Self-Defense

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A Pine Ridge woman on trial in federal court in Rapid City for killing her boyfriend with a screwdriver last June sobbed on the witness stand as she told the jurors she was just defending herself and didn’t mean to kill him.

44-year old Doreen Brown is charged with 2nd-degree murder in the death of Donald McMillan outside her Pine Ridge home.

Brown testified that McMillan had abused her for 15 months and was attacking her in the moments before she stabbed him. Brown said McMillan had hit her with a tree branch and she was afraid he was going to kill her.

Prosecutor and assistant U-S Attorney Heather Sazama told the jurors the couple argued and physically abused each other nearly every day when they drank alcohol, but that last June Brown “took it too far.”
