A trio of 3rd quarter pick sixes turned a 14-12 Hay Springs halftime lead into a 54-12 rout of Crawford on Thursday night.
The two teams exchanged blows in the first half as the Hawks struck first on the legs of Gage Mintken for an 8-0 lead. The margin would stand until Crawford’s Hayes Frahm threw back to back touchdown passes midway through the 2nd quarter to give the Rams a 12-6 advantage.
Hay Springs Senior quarterback Logan DeCoste found Mintken out of the backfield shortly before half to give the home team the lead heading to halftime.
Just before half, Frahm took a hard hit and sustained an injury that would force him from the remainder of the game. That’s when the tables turned.
Mintken would pick off the first pass of each of Crawford’s first two 2nd half drives and return both of them for scores. As the Rams were putting a drive together DeCoste would grab an interception and rumble towards the end zone to put the score at 38-12.
Another DeCoste pass to Mintken and a Mintken run in the 4th capped off the scoring.
Hay Springs moves to 4-1 with a big game looming against 3rd ranked Potter-Dix next Friday, Crawford falls to 3-2 and will host a rivalry game with Sioux County.
