After the first day of the Class B state wrestling tournament in Omaha, the Chadron pair of Daniel Wellnitz and Sawyer Haag have advanced to Saturday morning’s third round of consolations.
It was a disastrous start for the Cardinals as all five of their state qualified wrestlers lost their opening match.
Rhett Cullers went 0-2 at 160-lbs with losses by major decision and technical fall to finish the season 30-16. Kade Waggener, who ends with a record of 34-6, went two and out at the hands of a 4-1 decision and a pin in 4:42 at 182-lbs. Ryan Bickel also made a quick exit at 285-lbs, losing both of his matches by pin in times of 3:50 and 4:01 and completed his year with a record of 31-7.
Wellnitz, 30-11, and Haag, 33-10, picked up pins in the first round of consolations. Wellnitz downed Breckin Schoepf of Seward in 1:39 at 152-lbs for his 100th career win. Haag fended off Brody Schmielau of Elkhorn at 170-lbs in 4:34.
In the second round of consolations Wellnitz defeated a familiar foe in Mychaia Moss of Scottsbluff. Wellnitz took down Moss 3-1 by sudden victory to place 3rd at the B-4 district meet. On Friday Wellnitz had an easier time with a 6-1 decision.
Haag battled Joao Croteau of Norris to a 3-0 win.
In Saturday’s third round of consolations Wellnitz will meet 33-8 Diego Meganda of Schuyler. Haag matches up with Jackson Phelps of Hastings who boasts a record of 28-11.
Third round consolations will follow semifinals on Saturday morning. A win both or either wrestler will send them to the medal rounds. Matches begin at 8:00 am.
