The high school basketball season begins today, and Chadron’s boys and girls start in traditional fashion at the Western Conference Tournament being played at both Scottsbluff and Gering High Schools.
The tournament was trimmed to six teams after North Platte and Sterling, CO made the decision not to participate this year.
The Chadron boys open with defending tourney champion Scottsbluff at Gering High School. The Cardinals return just 25% of their scoring from last season, but add three transfers who should help make up for the lack of returning points.
We will begin our coverage at 3:50 pm on AM 610 KCSR, Chadrad.com, and the KCSR App. Tip off is at 4:00 pm.
At the exact same time, the Chadron girls will battle Mitchell at Scottsbluff High School. The Lady Cardinals are the defending Western Conference champs, but are trying to replace a large graduating class and possibly the Panhandle’s best player, Olivia Reed, who dropped in 17 points per game last season, but moved with her family back to Colorado when her father, former CSC men’s basketball coach Houston Reed took an assistant coaches position at Northern Colorado.
Other girls first round action includes Sidney versus Gering and Alliance facing Scottsbluff.
A Chadron loss and the Lady Cards would meet the Scottsbluff/Alliance winner at 8:00 pm on Friday night. A win and they could face Sidney or Gering at 6:00 pm.
For the boys, Mitchell and Gering make up one match up and Sidney and Alliance are the other. With a win, Chadron would play the Mitchell/Gering winner at 6:00 pm on Friday. A loss and the Red Birds square off with Alliance or Sidney at 4:00 pm.
We will release our broadcast info for Friday by Thursday night.
