Chadron, Gordon-Rushville Wrestlers Take To The Mats In Omaha

With the class A and D state wrestling meet wrapping up on Thursday, classes B and C take center stage today and tomorrow at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. Chadron in class B and Gordon-Rushville in class C, both have five wrestlers competing.

Class B will have the morning session today with matches starting at 8:00 am MT.

Chadron’s Daniel Wellnitz, 31-10, is up first at 152-lbs followed by Rhett Cullers at 160-lbs who is 30-14, Sawyer Haag, 31-9 at 170-lbs, Kade Waggener at 182-lbs with a record of 35-4, and Ryan Bickel at 285-lbs who is 31-5.

Cullers, Haag, and Bickel didn’t get any favors with their draws in what most considered Nebraska’s most competitive class. Cullers will wrestle against 37-0 Kobe Lyons of York, Haag faces Evan Canoyer of Waverly who boasts a 38-1 record, while Bickel squares off with Omaha Concordia’s Neil Hartman who is 31-3.

Wellnitz meets Cooper Spaulding of Norris with a 22-5 record and Waggener wrestles Braden Hanson of Blair with a 37-12 record.

Chadron’s matches should begin between 8:45 and 9:00 am this morning.

Gordon-Rushville’s contingent will be a part of the class C field this afternoon at 4:00 pm.

Every single Mustang state qualifier had to venture back through the consolation rounds at districts last week and were dealt tough first round matches.

Tucker Banister, 27-9, will wrestle lead off for Gordon-Rushville at 120-lbs and face Lance Olberding, 35-4, of Fort Calhoun. Right behind at 126-lbs will be Traiton Starr, 32-14, against Mitch Albrecht of Raymond Central who is 45-6.

At 145-lbs is Jace Freeseman with a 31-13 record who will wrestle Hunter Gilmore of Arlington who is 43-1. Teagan Snyder, 26-12 at 170-lbs, takes on 43-7 Tre Daro of David City, and Taylon Pascoe rounds out the line-up at 182-lbs with a 26-15 record and will wrestle Caden Egr of Yutan with a 29-1 record.

First round matches will be followed by quarterfinals, consolation round two, and consolation round two.
