Justus Alcorn pushed across the goal line from 1-yard out on 4th down with :27 seconds left in the 4th quarter for a touchdown and then found Xander Provance for the 2-point conversion as Chadron stayed undefeated with a 16-14 win over Gering on Friday night.
To leave no doubt, Sawyer Haag intercepted a Gering pass as time expired to give the Cardinals their 3rd consecutive win in the series with the Bulldogs.
Provance started off the scoring with a 2-yard run that would give Chadron a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
Gering responded with a pair of 2nd quarter touchdowns, including a rushing score with 4.4 seconds left to go on top 14-6 just before half. Provance would make it interesting as he took the ensuing kickoff 89-yards for a touchdown, but had it called back on a penalty.
A back and forth 3rd quarter would pay off for the Cardinals as Gering would mishandle a punt in to the endzone for a safety, cutting the Gering lead down to 14-8 entering the 4th quarter.
Before Alcorn’s plunge in to the endzone, he had a passing touchdown to Dawson Dunbar called back, making the 2nd scoring play the Cardinals had negated by a penalty.
Chadron is now 3-0 on the season and will return home to Cardinal Field next Friday for a Homecoming bout with Mitchell.
