Chadron Sweeps Legion DH From Alliance

By Con Marshall

The Chadron FNBO Junior and Senior Nationals swept their Alliance American Legion counterparts Wednesday night in a doubleheader at Maurice Horse Field.

The Chadron Seniors scored first and last in downing the Spartans 3-2. Dawson Dunbar of the Nationals was the star of the game, collecting two hits, scoring two runs, and striking out 8 Spartans while giving up just 5 hits in going the distance on the mound.

Dunbar led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and scored one of Chadron’s two runs that inning.  Alliance scored once in the top of the 2nd and threatened to take the lead, but Mario Garza was thrown out at the plate after a pitch that got past the catcher was retrieved in time for the out at home.

The score remained 2-1 until the visitors tied the game with a run in the top of the 7th on a walk, wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and Garza’s single to right center.

Dunbar was Chadron’s first batter in the bottom of the inning and singled to center.  He soon stole 2nd and moved to 3rd and came home with the winning run when consecutive pitches got past the Alliance catcher.

Both teams finished with five hits. Like Dunbar, Cody Hall had two hits for Chadron, including a double, and Daniel Wellnitz singled.

Garza had two singles for Alliance while Chase King and Kellen Muhr each had 1. Brent Halouska tripled in the 2nd immediately after the Spartans had scored.

The Chadron Juniors won their game 8-5 when Quinn Bailey hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Chadron and Alliance Juniors are both back in action this weekend as Chadron hosts the American Legion Class B Area 7 Junior Tournament.

The Nationals are seeded 4th and play Ogallala Friday at 7:00 PM, the winner playing the Gering-Sidney winner Sat at 7:00. Alliance has a 1st round bye and will play the Chadron-Alliance loser Saturday at 4:00.
