The Chadron High softball team went 2-1 on Saturday at the McCook Tourney to capture 5th place.
Head Coach Jodi Hendrickson is pleased with her team’s improvement, “Last year at this point our record was 2-7. We currently have a 4-5 record, defeating teams that we fell short to in past years”.
The Cardinals started the day with a 10-3 loss to Gering. Chadron scored single runs in each of the first three innings to grab a 3-1 lead, but the Bulldogs used 8 runs in their half of the 3rd to go up 9-3.
A Gering run in the 4th made for the final margin.
Trailing 5-1 against Holdrege in the consolation semifinals, Chadron scored 7 in the bottom of the 3rd to go up 8-6.
Two more in the 4th pushed the lead to 5, but the Duster would tack on three in the fifth to close the gap to the final score of 11-9.
On her bats on Saturday Hendrickson said, “We are learning to adjust at the bat much better and keep errors down.”
” There is no doubt about it, we are a young team. Confidence and the mentality that we can compete against these larger schools is going to take us far.”, Hendrickson said.
It was a one run 4-3 win over Alliance in the 5th place game.
Chadron scored 2 in the 2nd, and one a piece in the 3rd and 4th to go up 4-0, but Alliance rallied with 3 in the 5th before the Cardinals defense finished it off.
