Chadron High wrestler Fia Rasmussen took 4th place at 124-lbs on Saturday at the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association girls state wrestling tournament in York.
On Rasmussen competing at the state meet, Chadron High wrestling coach Jamie Slingsby said, “The girls state tournament was a great experience for Fia. During the season she has been forced to wrestle boys and the results have not always been good. Fia was able to wrestle girls at the tournament and those tough matches against the boys paid off this weekend.”
Rasmussen started the meet with a 2nd round, 6-2, decision over Ryllee Hoppe of Norfolk. In the quarterfinals Rasmussen would fall by pin to Kristen Schellenberg of Scribner-Snyder in 3:38.
Battling back through the consolation rounds, Rasmussen pinned her next two opponents, Lexi Southard of Nebraska City and Brooklin Kuester of West Point-Beemer, in times of 3:44 and 2:17.
In the consolation semifinals Rasmussen slid by Selena Zamora of South Sioux City with a 4-0 decision.
It was a meeting of Northwest Nebraska wrestlers in the consolation finals as Rasmussen lost to Josephine Redman of Gordon-Rushville by pin in 2:06.
When looking ahead in the sport of girls wrestling Slingsby said, “Fia knows wrestling in the boys season now, will better prepare her for the girls season if the NSAA passes it in the future. 178 girls competed this year at the NSWCA state tournament and girls participation will only get bigger.”
Rasmussen is now the 2nd Chadron Cardinal wrestler to place at the NSWCA girls state meet after Paige Denke took 2nd place at 106-lbs in 2020.
