A last ditch effort to schedule a game in place of the one canceled on Wednesday was unsuccessful. According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Nebraska had reached out to UT-Chattanooga in hopes of scheduling the Mocs for a game on Saturday after the Huskers originally scheduled game against Wisconsin was ruled a no contest after the Badgers reported COVID-19 issues. The new arrangement was ultimately struck down by a vote of Big Ten university presidents and chancellors. In a statement released by Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos and Chancellor Ronnie Green it said, “With the cancellation of the game against Wisconsin, we did explore the possibility of securing a non-conference game for Saturday. The discussions we had were with teams that had already implemented stricter testing protocols than those mandated by the Big Ten Conference. Those details were non-negotiable if we were to bring a non-conference opponent to Lincoln.” The statement went on to say, “We believe the flexibility to play non-conference games could have been beneficial not only for Nebraska, but other Big Ten teams who may be in a similar position as the season progresses. The ability for all Big Ten members to play a non-conference game if needed could provide another data point for possible College Football Playoff and bowl consideration.” Nebraska’s next game will be in Evanston, Illinois against Northwestern on November 7th.
