Crawford Earns District Runner-Up, Hay Springs’ Varvel Clinches State Golf Spot

The Crawford boys golf team is sending the entire team to state for the first time since 2015 and will have a competitor in the field for the first time since 2018 following Monday’s runner-up finish at the D-5 district meet in Kimball.

The Rams were led by a pair of top 10 finishers. Payton Swanson carded an 86 to place 5th and John Nolan followed with a 94 as part of a four way tie for 10th.

Rounding out Crawford’s team are Rhett Flack, who just missed a top 10 finish with a 96, Mitch Knode, and Roman Metz.

Crawford finished just three strokes behind Perkins County in the team race 375-378. Hemingford snagged the other team qualifying spot with a 384..

Hay Springs’ Gabe Varvel is also headed to state next week at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte after his 7th place round of 92. Varvel is the first Hawk to make state since 2017.

Kyler Lusche of Kimball won the individual title with a 75.
