Fierce weather conditions challenged the Chadron State College golf team on Monday at the Hardrocker Spring Open at Arrowhead Country Club in Rapid City. The Eagles shot a 341 on the first 18 holes, and came back in the afternoon to card 355 in another 18, to finish third with 696 strokes total. Eleven teams competed.

“It wasn’t our best performance,” said CSC Head Golf Coach John Ritzen. “The wind was bad, so scores weren’t going to be great, but we didn’t step up and compete like we needed to. We’re all disappointed, but now we have to forget it and get back to work before conference.”

The tournament, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, was played all in one day, in anticipation of 40-degree temperatures forecasted for Tuesday. Conditions were cool but fair in the morning, before an overcast and blustery afternoon set in.

Junior Alpine Hickstein led the afternoon session for the Eagles with an 82, while sophomore Kinsey Smith was the lowest scorer for CSC in the final 18.

CSC led the field statistically with six birdies. Three came from freshman Allison Acosta, two from Hickstein and one from junior Jordan Grasis. Acosta and sophomore Kenzey Kanno, playing independently, tied for second individually with three apiece.

The University of Sioux Falls took the team trophy, shooting 339-342-681. The runner up was South Dakota School of Mines, playing on its home course, and firing 340-349-689.

Dakota Wesleyan University had the individual winner in Megan Hinker, who shot 81-77-158.
