Chadron State College golfers had an excellent first round at the Samuel Proal Invitational at Pueblo Country Club on Monday, putting them 4th of 10 teams and only 10 strokes off the lead, held by Colorado Mesa University. The Eagles shot one of the program’s all-time low rounds, combining its top four scores for 320 strokes.

Sophomore Alpine Hickstein matched her career low single round score with a two-over-par 74, putting her tied for second place out of 57 who entered the tournament. She shot birdie on three holes.

Brooke Kramer and Allison Acosta each shot 81. Kramer’s four birdies tied statistically for third most at the tournament Monday. Acosta’s first 18 were just one stroke off a career low.

Kinsey Smith rounded out the scoring by carding 84, narrowly edging her stroke average from 2019-20.

The Eagles rallied from several strokes down, over the final few holes, to overtake both host CSU-Pueblo and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, which won the season’s first event four weeks ago.

Every Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s golf team is represented at the tournament, although one – MSU Denver – entered only three players competing independently.
