CSC Men’s Wrestlers Defeat Ranked Adams Team

The Chadron State College men’s wrestling team upset Adams State University, which is currently ranked as high as No. 7 in NCAA Division II by intermatwrestle.com, on Thursday evening in the Chicoine Center in Chadron. The visiting Grizzlies gave up a forfeit weight class, however the Eagles scored two tech falls, a major decision, and a decision to scrap together a 23-17 win.

“For the first time in a month, the guys went out there and wrestled,” said CSC Head Men’s Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter. “They were starting to do some of the things we tried to implement in practice. Some of the younger guys, I was really proud of, especially where true freshman Quade Smith was tied in the third period with a top-ranked guy.”

The match began at 184, where CSC’s Rowdy Pfeil gave the Eagles a 5-0 start with a tech.

A narrow decision by ASU’s eighth-ranked Hunter Tobiasson at 197, and an open weight at 285 by ASU made it 11-3 for the Eagles.

Smith, the freshman, led the first period at 125 pounds, 2-1, before getting caught in the third period.

CSC won the next two, with sophomore Colter Julian teching his opponent at 133, and classmate Ethan Leake majoring the Grizzlies’ Cael Figueroa at 141. The score then stood at 20-6 CSC.

ASU answered back with three straight bout wins. No. 4 Noah Hermosillo and No. 7 Josiah Rider scored majors, while undefeated Samuel Loera picked up his seventh win, by a score of 3-1, over CSC’s Preston Renner at 165.

In the final bout of the night, CSC’s Darwin Hull jumped out to an early lead, but then he survived a late comeback, in an 11-10 deciding result.

New Mexico Highlands University visits the Chicoine Center for a 6 p.m. dual on Friday.
