Chadron State College entered the Yellow Jacket Fall Classic at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Monday, facing off against its two nearest conference rivals in South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State.

Although the Eagles had three of the top four golfers in the tournament, through 18 holes, most of the golfers shot above their career stroke averages as CSC sat second to South Dakota Mines by four strokes after Monday’s round. The Hardrockers recorded 353 strokes, to the Eagles’ 357.

Kenzey Kanno was the lone exception to make good on her career pace. The freshman from Mitchell, Nebraska, hit her career average exactly with a score of 84. She finished Monday in third place among the field of 23.

Playing independently, sophomore Kayla Elder was in second place with her best one-day showing so far this season, carding 83.

Tee off for the second round at Spearfish Canyon Country Club is at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
