CWS Roundup: MSU Breaks Strikeout Record, Virginia Runs Away From Tennessee

— Will Bednar had a career-high 15 strikeouts in six innings, the most at the College World Series in 25 years, and Mississippi State held off Texas 2-1.

Bednar and Landon Sims combined for a CWS team record 21 strikeouts and the Bulldogs raised their season total to 765 strikeouts, tying the Division I record.

Bednar’s total was the highest by an individual since Clemson’s Kris Benson struck out 15 against Miami in 1996

MSU scored twice in the second inning and held off Texas in the ninth.

— Logan Michaels homered for the first time this season and Andrew Abbott pitched six shutout innings as Virginia beat Tennessee 6-0 at the College World Series.

Abbott and the Cavaliers held down a powerful Tennessee offense. Michaels hit Chad Dallas’ hanging breaking ball out to left in the second inning for only his second homer in 343 at-bats since he joined the Cavaliers in 2019.

Abbott struck out 10 and worked out of trouble in three of his six innings before he turned the game over to Matt Wyatt.
