Eagles Go 3-0 In Puerto Rico

By Con Marshall Chadron Record BOX SCORE

Clutch baskets by seniors Brady Delimont and CJ Jennings down the stretch on Sunday provided Chadron State College with a 74-64 victory over the University of Sacred Heart and a sweep of the three games the Eagles played in the San Juan Classic in Puerto Rico this past weekend.

The game had eight ties and 11 lead changes before the Eagles tallied 11 of the 13 points in the last five minutes to clinch the verdict. Delimont scored six of those points on back-to-back 3-pointers and Jennings posted the remaining five with a trey and two free shots.

Delimont finished with a team high-19 points while sinking five of 11 triples and four of five free throws.  Jennings hit 4-of-10 on threes and was six of eight at the line for 18 points.

Other Chadron State veterans were major contributors. Marcus Jefferson scored 12 points and Teddy Parham added nine points and had six rebounds and five assists, both team-highs.

Altogether the Eagles were 16 of 39 (41%) from behind the arc, but were only 7-of-18 on two-point attempts and just 12 of 25 at the charity stripe.

CSC Coach Shane Paben was critical of the free throw shooting, but was pleased with his players’ effort, said they moved and shared the ball well, “took a lot of good shots” and played good defense despite having tired legs while playing their third game in three days.

“This wasn’t a pretty win, but we were able to gut it out,” Paben said. “Because of injuries we had before we came here we weren’t at full strength, but we still got three nice team victories. I think we’re on the upswing.”

Sacred Heart was led by Rychell Janga with 20 points and six rebounds.  He hit half of his team’s 12 treys and had six rebounds. Daniel Mangual and Randell Baez each added 10 points for the Dolphins.

Chadron State’s other wins in San Juan were over Puerto Rico Carolina 81-57 and Puerto Rico Rio Piedras 79-65.  Now 4-4, the Eagles will open their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule this coming weekend by hosting Fort Lewis and Western Colorado on Friday and Saturday nights.
