The Chadron State College wrestlers are in for an experience on Thursday evening, when they get to compete in front of a Devaney Center crowd against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. The match is set for 7 p.m. Central time, after which the Huskers will dual Nebraska-Kearney. All of the evening’s events will be aired on the Big Ten Network-Plus, a subscription service.
The Eagles are riding high, fresh off their 43-0 win over Northeastern Junior College, which was November 1 in the Chicoine Center. CSC got two pins, four majors, three decisions and a forfeit as it swept all 10 bouts, plus four additional matches. It also introduced four freshmen into the lineup, as well as a transfer, Ethan Leake, who wrestled exhibition.
Thursday will be the first competition for the Huskers, who return 29 letterwinners, eight of nine national qualifiers, and both of its All-Americans to the roster in 2021-22. Last year’s team placed third at the Big Ten Championships and 12th at NCAAs, while winning seven of its eight duals, all of them in conference.
Five on the Huskers’ current roster were in the lineup against the Eagles when the teams last met in 2019. Three CSC wrestlers – Joe Ritzen, Terry Winstead, and Mason Watt – remain from that matchup.
In that previous clash, Tate Allison earned a 3-1 decision at 165, and Winstead took his opponent to sudden victory at 184, as the Nebraska team prevailed 37-3. CSC later went on to a 45-3 win over Hastings College, while the Huskers won 47-0 against Kearney, who had a team penalty point deducted from the final score.
Thursday evening’s dual is the second of 12 scheduled for the Eagles. They will leave Lincoln and head to Mitchell, South Dakota, for the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday.
