The Chadron State College volleyball team earned the win in a 3-2 nail biter at home Friday night against conference rival Black Hills State (4-7). The team moved to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 against conference opponents.
After losing 22-25 in sets one and two, the Eagles went on to win 25-20 in set three and 28-26 in set four. Tied at 15-15 in set five, middle hitter Aiyana Fujiyama brought the score to 16-15 on a kill, receiving an assist from setter Audrey Bennett. Then on a rally in which outside hitter Allie Ferguson was the server, an attack error was committed by Black Hills State’s Karly Marx. The set concluded at 17-15, giving CSC the win.
There were multiple freshmen who stepped up to be statistical team leaders in Friday’s match. Outside hitter Amber Harvey earned 19 total kills on the night. Audrey Bennett led in aces (3) and assists (31). Aiyana Fujiyama amounted to 7 blocks and finished third on the team with 9 kills behind Olivia Moten-Schell’s 13.
“I thought we had a lot of fire and grit,” said Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Stadler. “Our team showed a heart and an energy that we had been missing. It was great to see them go out and battle.”
The Eagles will resume play when they host the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers (6-5) Saturday the 25th at 6 p.m.
