The Chadron State College softball team split its final two home games with Colorado School of Mines on Monday, after postponing its series from Saturday and Sunday due to weather and field conditions. The Eagles won 6-1 in the morning game, getting a complete game from senior pitcher Tia Kohl. Kohl came back in the second inning of the afternoon game, to pitch a scoreless remainder of game two, but the Eagles were unable to recover offensively, dropping game two 8-0 in five innings.
Seniors Kohl, Allie Mason, and Gabby Russell were honored between games in a Senior Day ceremony.
CSC got five of its six runs by smashing the ball over the outfield wall in game one.
Sophomore Mackenzi Kroll homered for three runs as the cleanup batter in the first inning, bringing in freshman Aliyah Rothstein, who reached on an error, and Sloane Quijas, who walked. Among the three runs were both the go-ahead and the game-winner.
In the second, Mines freshman Lexie Semeyn and sophomore Sara Larson strung together back-to-back doubles for the visitors’ only run of the game.
CSC matched the Mines run in the bottom of the second, and later, in the fifth, junior Addison Spears homered to bring in Mason for the Eagles’ fifth and sixth runs.
Kohl improved to 6-14 as a result of her win, while freshman Cassidy Chvatal dropped to 4-9.
In game two, the Orediggers put across six runs in the first inning and two more in the second, giving them just enough offense to put the game away in five innings.
All eight runs came on RBI singles. Junior Grace Gonzales led her team batting 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI.
After entering in the second, Kohl held the Orediggers to two base hits in three and one-third innings, after Mines had amassed its lead, and she did not give up a run.
Russell fell to 2-7 in the loss, while the complete game shutout was credited to Sadriena Rodriguez.
The teams were unable to play a scheduled game three, as a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference by-law prevents a game from beginning after 3 p.m. on the last day of a series. Game two ended at approximately 3:15 p.m.
CSC remained ninth in the RMAC standings at 10-22 in the league, and 11-33 overall.
Mines fell to 15-27 (15-17 RMAC) and lost one place to sit seventh entering the final weekend of the season.
Chadron State faces league co-leader Colorado Mesa University on Friday and Saturday in two doubleheaders to end the regular season.
