Harkless, Nachtigal Medal At State Track Meet For Hot Springs, Peterson For Edgemont

      The 2021 South Dakota State Track Championships wrap up today. Normally, the 3 classes would come together at the School of Mines in Rapid City, but because of lingering COVID concerns they’re staying separate – Class ‘AA’ in Sturgis, Class ‘A’ in Spearfish and Class ‘B’ in Rapid City.

     Hot Springs had a pair of medalists yesterday. Marcus Harkless placed 2nd in the discus. Harkless came in with the 2nd-best throw in the state and finished 18-feet behind the winner and 10-feet in front of the 3rd place finisher.

     Jaylen Nachtigall to 4th in the girls 100 hurdles, just 1-100th of a second out of 3rd but 1.3 second behind the winner. Nachtigall was 4th in her prelim heat, but made the finals as one of the 5 fastest non-winning times from the 3 heats.

      Carlie DeBoer tied for 17th in the girls HJ while the girls 4×200 relay ended up 19th. The area did have 1 Class A champion as Jade Ecoffey of Red Cloud in Pine Ridge won the girls 3200. 

      Morgan Peterson, Edgemont’s lone Day 1 competitor in Class B in Rapid City, placed 8th in the girls 100 hurdles. Peterson was 2nd in her qualifying heat with the 6th fastest overall time 

     In the AA meet in Sturgis, Matayah Yellow Mule of Rapid City Central won the girls TJ while Rapid City Stevens won the boys 4×800 relay.
