Gage Mintken ran for 125 yards and 6 touchdowns as Hay Springs broke a two game losing streak to Creek Valley with a 37-14 season opening win over the Storm on Friday night.

The victory also marked Hay Springs’ first season opening win since 2018.

The Hawks took the opening kick and set themselves up at midfield before Mintken cashed in just three plays later to take a 6-0 lead.

A defensive stand from their own 13-yard line led to a 66-yard, 4-minute drive that ended in another Mintken touchdown run.

Creek Valley would respond with their own 4-minute scoring drive to cut the deficit to 12-8, before Mintken ran wild again to put Hay Springs up 18-8. The Storm answered one more time to pull within 18-14, but Hay Springs shut the door the rest of the way.

Logan DeCoste had an efficient game at quarterback, going 8-for-12 with 157 yards.

The Hawks defense came up big with a trio of interceptions, one deep inside their own territory.

Hay Springs will have a bye next Friday before traveling to Arthur County on September 10th.
