Hay Springs’ Varvel Narrowly Misses Medal At State Golf

Gabe Varvel of Hay Springs came away with the area’s best finish at a state golf championship, four strokes out of securing a medal with a two day round of 173 to place 22nd at the Class D meet in North Platte.

Varvel’s round on Tuesday was a little bumpier than Monday’s, but his score of 88 kept him in the upper 3rd of the pack.

Jace Nelson of Gordon-Rushville took 24th with his score of 171 at the Class C meet in Columbus, trimming three strokes off of his first day score to card an 84 on Tuesday.

Chadron’s Jacksyn Behrends added three strokes from day one and ended middle of the pack in 41st with a 175.

The other Gordon-Rushville golfer at state, Tegan Snyder, wrapped up his state appearance with a 183.

Crawford’s Payton Swanson was the top Ram with a 186 with teammate John Nolan one stroke back with a 187.

Rhett Flack put together a 197, Roman Metz scored a 202, and Mitch Knode ended with a 227.

In the Class D team standings Crawford finished in a tie for 11th with Perkins County, tallying a 768.

Regionally, Scottsbluff’s Austin Thyne was 7th in Class B with a 153. Fellow Bearcat Kaedon Patton was a stroke back in 8th.

Mitchell’s Cael Peters lost a tie breaker to Noah Carpenter of Palmyra for a runner-up finish with a 155. Kimball’s Kyler Lusche placed 14th in Class D with a 168.

Norris cruised to the team title in Class B, Columbus Scotus breezed in Class C, and Overton held off North Platte St. Pat’s in Class D.
