The Sioux County Lady Warriors went 1-3 in last week’s action on the hardwood, picking up a win over Hay Springs but dropping games to Bridgeport and Morrill.

The Warriors took control of Thursday’s contest against Hay Springs early and rolled to a 53-33 victory.

Sioux County opened the game with a 14-7 outing in the first quarter, including the first of their seven treys. The Warriors maintained the pace, sinking 13 in the second quarter while holding the Hawks to six points for a 27-13 edge at half-time.

Sioux County continued its pace and strong defense, putting together a 14-8 run in the third to keep the contest out of reach. The Warriors’ younger players took over in the final quarter, and the two teams each netted 12 points.

Karlee Juhnke led the Warriors with 15 points.

The Warriors’ win over Hay Springs followed a 75-46 loss to Bridgeport on Jan. 26. The Warriors took an early lead in the game, but a strong second quarter showing by Bridgeport helped keep victory out of reach.

After seeing the score tied four times in the first quarter, Bridgeport capitalized on free throws to go ahead 19-13. The Bulldogs’ offense came out in full force in the second quarter, sinking 28 points.

Sioux County, however, struggled to add anything to the board, scoring just five before half-time. The Warriors outscored Bridgeport 13-9 after the break and the teams were mostly even in the final eight minutes, with the Bulldogs edging the Warriors 16-15 to end the game.

Karlee Juhnke led the Warriors with 14 points.

Sioux County capped its action for the week in a nail-biter contest against Morrill on Saturday. The Warriors led early in what became a back-and-forth contest in which the Lions eked out a 42-40 victory.

Morrill came from behind to take a first quarter 13-9 lead and led by as much as 12 mid-way through the second frame. The Warriors made a late stand in the first half, however, to close within five, 26-21, at the break.

The teams traded leads throughout the third quarter, with Morrill leading 32-31 as the final eight minutes began. A trey by Kodie Rempp with just over five minutes to play put the Warriors on top 34-33, and a bucket by Beth Klein extended their lead to 36-33.

The Lions scored five unanswered points in the next two minutes to go ahead 38-36. Rempp and Kailey Klein each netted two free throws for the Warriors, in the final 90 seconds, but the Lions also a field goal and two free throws to make it 42-40 with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Two Warrior attempts at the bucket before the buzzer missed, handing the win to Morrill.

Kailey Klein led the Warriors with 16 points, followed by Kodie Rempp with 12. Skylar Edmund had 11 rebounds on the night.
