McLain’s best squad, at least by record, was his 2019-20 team that went 23-3 and had earned the #2 seed at the 2020 Class C1 state tournament.

His first two teams in 2014-15 and 2015-16 were also state tourney teams. The 2014-15 group, McLain’s first season, won their final six games in a row including a 46-39 victory over Ainsworth in the district championship to seal what was then Chadron’s fourth consecutive trip to state.

The following season the Lady Cardinals needed the help of the wildcard system after losing to Mitchell in the sub-district tournament, but made it five straight state appearances.
