Upton Boys Win Title, Torrington And Newcastle Girls Head To State

Thursday was a busy day in the Cowboy state for regional and state tournament basketball.

The Upton boys and girls basketball teams fell short of a sweep of the 1A title games.

Cokeville defeated the Lady Bobcats 62-48 to capture their third straight 1A girls championship.

The Upton boys, playing in their first title game since 2016, overcame a first quarter deficit on their way to a 69-54 win over Saratoga.

While 1A and 2A wrap up state tourney play, 4A and 3A started sub-region play yesterday.

A pair of annual Chadron opponents will be at the girls state tournament next weekend. Newcastle downed Buffalo 64-61 in double overtime while Torrington held off Rawlins 57-43 to punch their tickets in a COVID adjusted format.

Newcastle will play Wheatland on Saturday to determine 3rd and 4th seed at the 3A girls state tourney while Douglas and Torrington play for 1st and 2nd seed.
