The Chadron State College wrestling team took two bouts from the University of Nebraska on Thursday evening, but the Cornhuskers prevailed 31-9 in a dual meet in the Devaney Center at the Nebraska Duals in Lincoln.
Besides the two wins, four other CSC grapplers kept their matches to within a single score.
“I’m very proud of the guys,” said CSC Head Men’s Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter. “I feel like we’re doing all the right things. This was a great opportunity for our program.”
True freshman Quade Smith started things off with a bang for the Eagles at 125 pounds. He scored a pin in the third period over a Huskers’ redshirt freshman who never lost in four years at a Missouri high school, and only lost twice at the college level in 2020-21.
Junior 197-pound Eli Hinojosa was the other winner for CSC. His opponent, fourth-year sophomore Anthony Gaona, had not competed since February 2019, but had an 18-9 record as a redshirt and won or placed at three open meets that season. Hinojosa won 6-2.
The biggest Nebraska wins of the night came from 2020-21 Big Ten Conference runners-up Ridge Lovett, a sophomore at 149 pounds, and Taylor Venz, a senior at 184.
Lovett’s tech fall over CSC true freshman Chance Bockenstedt came 18-0 in the first period. Bockenstedt was tied for the Eagles’ team lead in points scored in last week’s dual with Northeastern Junior College.
Venz won by fall over CSC’s Rowdy Pfeil, an All-RMAC pick as a true freshman last season. The fall occurred in the first period.
Nebraska put forward a lineup consisting of only two returners from last year’s varsity, those being Lovett and Venz.
CSC will wrestle in its first open meet of the season, on Saturday, at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, South Dakota.
