With both teams seeking their first wins of the season, the Minatare Indians and Sioux County Warriors battled it out to the end in a hard-fought contest Friday night. Minatare survived a late challenge by Sioux County to clinch the victory 38-35.

Sioux County struck first with a bucket by Michael Sanderson, but a trey by Minatare’s Kale Gibbons flipped that lead, and the score remained at 3-2 until there was just over a minute left in the first period. The Indians’ Dario Rodriguez opened up his team’s lead to five with another trey, but Sioux County’s Tucker Monroe answered immediately with a three-pointer of his own to keep the game within one. Rodriguez drained another three on the next play, and the opening stanza ended with Minatare ahead 9-5.

The Warriors pulled within two, 12-10, in the second quarter but Minatare shrugged them off again and took an 18-10 lead into the break. After half-time, the momentum remained in the Indians’ favor, and they kept a 28-18 edge as the final minutes began.

Sioux County put together a 17-10 run in the final minutes, however, giving Minatare a late scare but the clock ran out before they could take the lead.
