With all six letterwinners from a year ago returning, the Chadron State College golf team will open its season on Monday, Sept. 13 at the Swan Memorial Tournament in Thornton, Colo. It’s the first of four tourneys on the fall schedule.
It’s anticipated that the Eagles will again be led by Alpine Hickstein of Chadron. She’s had the team’s best 18-hole averages the past two years—78.64 strokes in 2019-20 and 78.8 in 2020-21. She capped her high school career by winning the Class C state championship in 2017 with a 142 total that remains tied for the second all-time in all classes at the Nebraska State Tournament.
Coach John Ritzen’s team has added other capable golfers the past few years. Kenzey Kanno of Mitchell, who tied for first in Class C at the 2018 state tournament, and Kinsey Smith of Windsor, Colo., shared the Eagles’ second best 18-hole averages of 83.3 strokes last season. Brooke Kramer of Aurora, Colo., was next at 84.5 and Allison Acosta of Ore Valley, Ariz., averaged 84.9 strokes.
Each of them has cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.79, placing them on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll.
Ritzen said another letterwinner, Jordan Grasis of Yuma, Ariz., has played especially well during the preseason and is challenging for a varsity slot.
The Eagles’ other tournaments this fall are Sept. 20—at Rapid City, S.D., Sept. 25—at Marshall, Minn., Oct. 11—at Pueblo, Colo.
