The Sioux County Warriors held off several challenges by the Cody-Kilgore Cowgirls Saturday for a 54-46 victory.
The Warriors took an early lead, but the Cowgirls refused to go away, often closing within three points. Four field goals by three Warriors – Beth Krein, Layla McCoy and Kodie Rempp – and a free throw by Karlee Juhnkee gave the first quarter edge to Sioux County, 9-6. That margin remained fairly constant as the teams traded buckets in the second until Kailey Klein drained a trey with three minutes left in the half. She turned it into a five-point play, drawing a foul after the shot and making both free throws. The 22-12 lead wouldn’t last long, however, as the Cowgirls charged back and ended the half within five points of overtaking the Warriors.
The third quarter saw more back-and-forth action, with the Cowgirls outscoring the Warriors 14-13. But five points by Rempp, including a trey, three by Rachel Krein, two each by Klein and Edmund and one by Britney Klein helped keep Sioux County ahead on the board.
Each team had their best quarters in the final frame, with the Warriors edging out the Cowgirls 18-15 in the stanza. Mid-way through the period, the Cowgirls tied the contest at 37 with a bucket by Taya From. Sioux County reclaimed the lead quickly with two free throws by Juhnke, who added a trey moments later for good measure to put the Warriors on top 44-41 with just over two minutes remaining. R. Krein found the net as well, and K. Klein added two treys to cap the game.
