Local athletes help winning All-Star team to victory

Several local athletes helped the girls’ Blue Team to a 95-88 victory in Friday’s Panhandle Prep All-Star Basketball game in Scottsbluff.

Sioux County’s Karlee Juhnke and Kodie Rempp, Gordon-Rushville’s Jayla Brehmer and Shelby Hurlburt and Hemingford’s Kyla Walker all played for the winning Blue Team. Lusk had two players – Anna Richardson and Courtney Rowley – on the Red Team.   

The Blue Team raced out to a 26-12 lead after the first quarter, only to see the Red Team close to within five mid-way through the second quarter. The Red Team took a brief 38-37 lead a few minutes later but the Blue Team answered immediately for a 40-37 lead. With two minutes remaining in the first half the contest was tied at 40, but the Blue Team found the go-ahead basket before time ran out for a 42-40 lead at the break.

The Red Team outscored their opponents 31-27 in the third quarter. Their efforts gave them a six-point advantage at times, and the Red Team took a 71-69 lead into the final period.

The Blue Team wasted no time reclaiming the lead in the fourth quarter, going ahead 73-72 but most of the remaining time was a back-and-forth affair, with ties at 75, 78 and 81. The Blue Team assembled a 14-7 run in the final stretch for the win.
