Northwestern Oklahoma State piled on six runs in the top of the third inning, and held its 10-2 lead through two more frames, in order to win a softball game over Chadron State College in five innings on Sunday at Lubbock Cooper High School in Texas.

The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the first with a home run by J’lyssa Martinez. They held it to within 4-2 in the second when Aliyah Rothstein scored an unearned run, pinch-running for Lauren Zimmerman who opened with a single.

However the Rangers exploded for seven hits in the top of the third, aided by a CSC throwing error, to account for six additional runs.

CSC pitchers held their opponents hitless through the remaining two innings, but the damage was done. The Eagles left five stranded on base the rest of the way.

NWOSU pitcher Hannah Howell improved to 3-0 on the season, while CSC’s Tia Kohl fell to 0-4.

The Rangers are now 3-2, while the Eagles are 0-5.

Chadron State will attend another non-conference tournament next weekend in the Oklahoma City area.
