Sioux Falls Trio Too Much For Eagles

A trio of 6-foot-4 players combined to score 71 points Friday night while leading the University of Sioux Falls to a 96-78 victory over Chadron State during a men’s non-conference basketball game in Sioux Falls.

Senior Matt Cartwright poured in 28 points, junior Chase Grinde tallied 24 and redshirt freshman Jake Kettner 19 for the Cougars, now 3-1 for the season. The trio combined to shoot 25 of 48 from the field, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, and 15 of 18 from the free throw line.

Cartwright connected on nine of 10 field goal shots, including all three of his treys, while pouring in 24 points in the first half, when Sioux Falls shot 58 percent from the field and built a 47-29 lead.

Both teams scored 49 points in the second half. The Eagles reduced the 18-point halftime deficit to eight points at 63-55 with 12:40 remaining and were down by just 10 points with 7:23 left. However, Sioux Falls led by at least 18 the final four minutes.

For the game, the Cougars shot 54.2% (32-59) from the field and the Eagles 41.1% (23-56). Sioux Falls was seven of 15 on 3-pointers and 25-32 at the line. Chadron State was eight of 21 from long range and 24-33 on free shots.

The Eagles’ top scorer was point guard Marcus Jefferson with 14 points on five of eight from the field, including two-of-four on threes and two-of-two at the line. Newcomers Kymani Dunham, a 6-9 junior transfer, and Tejaun Hale, a 6-4 freshman, each added 10 points.

Three more Eagles, center Porter Anderson, swingman Brady Delimont and guard Teddy Parham, contributed nine points apiece and transfer guard Mason Heimsta eight.

Led by Grinde’s eight, Sioux Falls outrebounded the Eagles 32-26 and had just seven turnovers, four fewer than CSC.

Now 0-4, the Eagles will seek to get their first win Sunday afternoon when they host Haskell Indian Nations from Lawrence, Kan., on at 4:30 in the Chicoine Center, following a women’s game starting at 2:30 between the Lady Eagles and Mount Marty College of Yankton, S.D.
