South Dakota Adds High School Softball

On Wednesday the South Dakota High School Activities Association voted to add softball as a varsity sport starting in the 2022-23 school year.

The only issue left to debate by the SDHSAA and its member schools is if it will be played in the spring or fall. The initial proposal stated that the season would be played in the spring, but a handful of the states largest school districts suggested a fall season.

Each school will now declare if they will field a team and which season of the year they’d prefer softball will be played. An option is also available to play it across both the fall and spring seasons.

Final details will be hashed out in January.

In neighboring states, Nebraska plays its season in the fall, while Wyoming, which had its first full season of sanctioned softball last year, plays in the spring. North Dakota is also on the list of states with a spring season, as is Minnesota. Iowa plays over the summer.
