The St. Thomas More boys basketball team had always hoped to face off with top seeded Vermillion in the semifinals of the South Dakota class A state tournament, but the Cavaliers didn’t know that it would be in the consolation semifinals.
Fifth seeded St. Thomas More fell behind fourth seeded Sioux Falls Christian 51-30 at the end of the 3rd quarter and couldn’t mount a big enough fourth quarter comeback in a 38-47 loss.
Dell Rapids, the eighth seed in the tourney, knocked off top seeded and undefeated Vermillion 53-52 on a deep three pointer as the fourth quarter buzzer sounded.
The consolation semifinal between the Cavs and Tanagers is at 11:00 this morning.
On the bottom half of the bracket Dakota Valley slid past Winner 65-58 and Sioux Valley knocked off Chamberlain 53-44.
