Chadron State College golfers wrapped up their first tournament of the season on Tuesday, finishing 11th at the 19-team Swan Memorial, hosted by Colorado Christian University at Todd Creek Golf Club north of Denver.
The Eagles played three rounds, totaling 993 strokes to finish five strokes behind preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference favorite Westminster College. Eleven of the 12 conference teams were present at the event.
“It wasn’t the start to the year that we envisioned after our practices and qualifying rounds,” said CSC Head Golf Coach John Ritzen. “The ladies have been playing great, but that didn’t show up this outing. We’re hoping to have a strong bounce back next week in Rapid City. They’re excited to get to work and clean things up before their next tournament.”
For CSC, Kenzey Kanno led the way with a 54-hole total of 239, which is her best career three-round score to date. She tallied 79 strokes in her first two rounds, and she finished with an 81 on Tuesday, leading the team in all three to place 21st in a field of 108.
Alpine Hickstein was right behind her, carding 79-80-84 and sharing the team lead in round one. Hickstein’s three-over score on her par threes tied her for seventh in the tournament, individually.
The Eagles were as high as ninth, after the first round, with their top two players in the top 10, but fell one spot in each of the final two rounds.
An RMAC rival, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs took top honors in the team score, firing 311-302-311-924. The Mountain Lions’ Julia Baroth won the individual title as well, shooting 74-72-70.
Chadron State continues its season on Monday, when it enters the Hardrocker Invite on Monday in Rapid City, at the Golf Club at Red Rock.
